[ Dream Contest | Contraptions and Creatures Contest | Writing: World Domination Speech | Participatory: Acronyms for Evil Organizations ]
Mad science is a dark and mysterious land of what if. What if we could provide cleaner energy? What if we could end world hunger? What if we could guarantee safety? What if we could rule the world? Madness and genius are only matters of degrees of social acceptability and understanding of the finished project. At the very root of 'mad science' is the idea that people fear what they do not understand--the line where the science and the strange get blurred into dastardly awry machinations. There is a little spark of madness in every genius, after all.
What if technology emerged differently? What if you harnessed electricity, not Thomas Edison? Would we be cranking our computers so that our isolated tesla cores could power our machines? What bits and cogs would power gaslamps to light our nights? What if you were the one who perfected the assembly line, rather than Henry Ford? Would personal transportation involve horse-like steel beasts? What if you flew the first aircraft, instead of the Wright brothers? Would the airships rooted in the days of zeppelins be refined to epic proportions, capable of moving entire cities? Innovation is a dark place, lit only by the human mind.
In Wolf Howl 2009, we invite you to explore the world of Mad Science: from the fantastic physics-defying creations of world salvation to the willful disregard for the laws of nature to bring about world domination. Do you have the spark of madness within you?
