What makes us so drawn to monsters? More than grotesqueness (as there are monsters that are terribly beautiful as well), more than size (there are hundreds of legends of demons and imps, ghosts and shadowy things), it's the sense of the unknown. When we depict what frightens us, what chills us down to our core, or perhaps what allures us, we give it all the hallmarks of aspects that make it alien or beyond our realm of comprehension. Monsters are unnatural, by definition. It is our nature to want to observe, be curiously aware of the unknown, and have dangerous encounters that leave us with a good story and greater thrill.

The pale moon and thin veil of October brings forth the monsters of our psyche, the demons once warded off by hoods and costumes, treats and the occasional trick. It is the time of year for monsters to gather in groups and whip up a wind, howl at the moon and travel in herds, groups, and packs.

...It's time for the Monster Mash, a gathering of monsters large and small, wonderous and hideous. It's a time for frolicking and trickery, ghastly stories and ghoulish fun.
