Personal Portrait Rules

Why would my portrait be rejected?

Portraits are approved by a small number of DEP staff. The reason to keep this number small is because reviewing portraits is highly subjective. Even with this subjectivity though there are list of basic guidelines that all reviewers follow.

These Things will get your portrait rejected:

1. A Broken portrait - This can be caused by many things, portrait too small, portrait misaligned/cut off, portrait too large, portrait not remapping fully. If your portrait is rejected for this reason it is because the reviewer had good reason to believe you would be unhappy with the way it would turn out and decided to empty the space to give you a chance to fix it. If your portrait is rejected for this reason you might want to check it more carefully when uploading, or load it into the FSH editor to check how it remaps, change its size, alignment, etc.

2. Copyright Violation - If we have been contacted by the creator/copyright holder of a portrait we will provide them with contact information so they can hopefully resolve the issue with you. This may lead to your portrait being rejected/cleared.

3. Exposed Genitals - Your portrait must follow the Teen+ standard at this time, this means no exposed/clearly defined naughtybits.

4. Hand Gesture - Your portrait contains a hand gesture or body gesture that is crude, derogatory or offensive.

5. Offensive symbol - Your portrait contains an offensive/controversial symbol displayed specifically for shock value or as the main subject of the portrait. The most common example of this is a prominently displayed swastika.

6. Nipple(s) - No nipples are allowed in portraits for females, males or otherwise (It's only fair after all). At the reviewers discretion covered nipples may be approved as long as the covering does in fact draw attention away from, not to the nipple underneath. As a side effect Nipple Rings are not allowed, it is impossible to have a nipple ring without a nipple no matter how it is drawn.

7. Not Teen+ - This is a category for the uncategorizable. At the reviewer's discretion a portrait's overall tone and/or subject may be found to be beyond the Teen+ Standard in one or many ways. This may also indicate an excess of bodily fluids (saliva, blood etc.) that just plain makes the port too 'icky' for Teen+.

8. Nudity - Your portrait's character(s) are excessively nude, whether or not genitals and nipples are present. Please note that being covered in fur and nothing else does not make you nude.

9. Profanity - Your portrait contains written text or symbols that convey language not suitable to the Teen+ Standard.

10. Remapping problems - Oops! The reviwer looking at your portrait sees that it's a remap-ready portrait, but it's not remapping! If your portrait is rejected for this reason make sure you're uploading it in a .fsh file, and check the options very carefully when you resubmit it. Everything should be fine the second time around if you set it up right.

11. Reupload of Rejected - Your portrait has already been rejected at least once. If you're getting this message you should really consider significantly editing your portrait or changing to a different one all together before reuploading.

12. Sexual Content - Your Port's too sexy for its space, too sexy for it's space... *ahem* If your portrait is rejected for this reason it's content is too sexual for the Teen+ Standard, whether or not genitals/nipples are present. There are some poses, especially when multiples characters are involved that are simply not acceptable. This can also indicate once again, an excess of bodily fluids.

13. Violent - Your portrait may be a beautifully rendered depiction of your budding warlord subduing and disposing of his most recent adversaries, but it's just too much or a little too blood-splattered to be acceptable to the Teen+ Standard. You might also be rejected for being too violent for depecting a gun pointed directly at the viewer, as this too is not quite Teen+ behavior. Edit it to tone it down, or if that's impossible, find a new portrait.

14. Bodily Fluids - So we've already mentioned body fluids twice (7 and 12) and blood (7 again and 13). So why does it also get it's own section? Because often the only thing wrong with a picture is that it's a little too sticky overall. Certain body fluids are never acceptable: Urine, semen, vomit, and feces to name a few. Saliva and blood are often acceptable, if kept to minimal, reasonable limits. A snarling, salivating wild ferian is likely acceptable, an excess of spittle in a sexual situation is not. Furres bleed when you poke them with sharp things, accidents happen, vampyres are often depicted crying bloody tears, this is all fine. Excessive bloody splattering, gushing, leaking, not acceptable. Less is more. Less is especially more acceptable.

As is obvious there is a lot of area for overlap in these categories. Portrait approval as mentioned earlier is highly subjective. Keep in mind however that the vast majority of portraits are approved with barely a second glance. It's only a small percentage that require any thought at all because they're close enough to 'the line' to be questionable.

Also keep in mind that at any time in the seven days from when a portrait is FIRST approved you can contact us to have it cleared for any reason. Barring extreme exceptions this service will only be provided once per portrait space unless you are a Silver Sponsor and have paid to have the space cleared, thereby resetting it.

In time there will be different levels of portraits accepted. Until then these rules are a little more lax than they probably should be. Eventually portraits too close to the upper end of the Teen+ Standard won't be rejected, but will be bumped up to a M16+ portrait instead.

Keep in mind that a rejection of your portrait doesn't mean that the portrait is 'bad'. Many beautiful, cute, handsome, and well made portraits are rejected simply because their content is just a little too much, not because the reviewer doesn't like them. Most of the time, especially if a reason is given, a portrait rejection means 'this needs revision, try again' not 'no'. If you find a portrait rejected more than a couple times feel free to send an FSH copy of it into portraits@furcadia.com and we shall do our best to provide you with an exact description of what needs to be changed before your port can be accepted. We love to see your art and appreciate what it adds to the Furcadian Community!
