Furcadia is adding player accounts, where your account name will be your email address. We'll be updating this page frequently and adding your questions to the FAQ as we get asked more things about them, so feel free to check back here later. We'll also be covering this information on the Furcadia Forums.
Your account will have all your character info stored on our server, so you can conveniently log on from any
computer anywhere, and play all your characters there instantly. Our next update will also be adding the ability to store with each character multiple descriptions, color schemes, and choice of default portrait and avatar for each one. This will be handy for costume changes, RPing a wounded version of yourself, storing different looks for your dragon form, phoenix form, winged form, or lots of other things. Having accounts is also going to help us provide better customer service, and make Furcadia a bit safer and more secure. You'll also be able to share characters safely with other people, while still maintaining control AND not having to give them your password. People who have shared access to a character also won't be able to transfer or trade any of its Digo items, change its email address, etc. All the control stays with you.
Getting set up for most people will just involve clicking on a link in an email we send you, to verify your email address, and then when our next update comes out, a number of the account features will go "live". This is going to lay the groundwork for a lot of exciting new features we're going to add in the future, including personal web pages for each character, a buddy list/messenger, and a lot more! We hope the effort of switching over won't be too much, and that you'll feel it was well worth it in the months (and years) ahead.

1)
What do I have to do to make sure my character(s) work with the new account system?
If you put in a valid email address for your character, you'll be getting an email from us automatically. All you have to do is click on the link in that email. Or you can go to this page and put in your character name and the validation code from the confirmation email. If you have more than one Furcadia character, you should get an email for each one, and you can just click on the link in each email. You shouldn't need to do anything more than that unless you didn't put in your current, correct email address for your character, or if you have more than ten characters. In that case, see questions 2 and 3 below.

What do I do if I didn't put in a valid email address when I made my character?
You need to log onto Furcadia with that character and type setemail [email address] to set a valid address. (Put your actual email address in place of [email address] ). A new validation email will be sent to you automatically. If you are under 13, please have your parents do this for you, as it is required by law. For more complete info, go here.

3)
What happens if I have more than ten characters?
If they're all registered with the same email address, you should decide which ones you want to use with that address. Only click on the links in the emails for those ten. (Note that if any of them have Digo Market items other than roses, they don't count towards the limit and you can add all of those to the same account as well as ten others.) To validate more characters, you'll need another email address you can use. Many services on the net offer free email accounts if you need one, including gmail, yahoo, hotmail, and others. Set the extra characters to new email addresses using the instructions in answer 2 above, and then click on the validation links in the new emails that get sent to you.

4)
I didn't get a confirmation email! Can I re-request one?
Yes. Wait 2-3 days first, to make sure the email wasn't just delayed. If you still haven't gotten one by then, just use the setemail command (as explained in question 2) and put your same email address in again. Another automated email will be sent to your address.

I don't remember which email address I put in when I made my character. How do I find out?
All you have to do is log onto your character, and once you're in Furcadia, type info and press the Enter key. It will show you what email address that character is currently set to, along with some other information about your character.

My friend is on vacation and won't be back for two months. Will he/she lose his characters?
Probably not. Our normal time limits are two weeks from your first validation email until we freeze a character, and one additional month from when the character is frozen until we'd delete the character. But since we know that some Furcadia players have long summer vacations, or only log onto Furcadia a few times a year, as we transition to this new system we're going to be allowing several extra months leeway to give everyone a chance. We think it'll be long enough that very few people would have a problem, if any. Also remember that any character with Digo Market items (not counting roses) will not be deleted under any circumstances, so if your friend has any of those on their character, that will keep them safe as well.

7)
Do I need to do anything different if I'm under 13?
Yes. By law, you're not allowed to give out any personal information on the Internet without your parent's permission. So if you are under 13, please just have them handle putting in your email address and reading and clicking on the validation emails. They may also want to look at Furcadia for themselves, consider setting some of the parental options, etc.

8)
How will I choose which character to play under the new account system?
After the next update, you'll be able to log onto Furcadia by putting in your email address and an account password that you'll be able to choose. Then you'll see the portraits and names of all your Furcadia characters, and you can just click on the one you want to play. If you want to use it, we'll also have an option to automatically log onto your account when you start Furcadia, and go directly to the character selection screen. That same screen will also have options for editing your characters as well.

9)
Should family members or roommates put all their characters on the same account together?
We strongly recommend that every person playing Furcadia create their own account, and that you never share your Furcadia password with anyone. If you share an account, then anybody else using that account could log onto your characters at any time. It will also enable each of you to maintain a separate buddy list for each person sharing the computer, etc.

Why are we required to give a valid email address now?
We need to be able to group together a player's characters into accounts for some of the exciting new game features we're adding. Using your email address for the account name is one of the best ways to make sure that most people will remember their account - which means less hassles for you, and also less work for our staff helping people who forgot. Our process of validating email addresses to make sure people don't use a fake or made-up one enables us to make sure we can quickly and easily communicate with anyone who has a problem with an order they placed, who has a character about to expire from inactivity, or for any other reason. If our staff needs to go to extra effort to find a way to contact some players, that increases our expenses and takes our time away from working on new game features. It also reduces our overhead due to bounced emails coming back to our mail server. We provide Furcadia as a totally free service, so it's especially important for us to keep expenses and staff time requirements needed to keep it going as low as possible. Think of providing us with your real, correct email address as the small "price of admission" in exchange for getting a game we've put over ten years work into to play for as long as you like. We think that's a reasonable price to pay, and we WILL keep your email address private - even from other players!

What happens if I waited too long and my character got "frozen"?
All you have to do is go verify your email address, and you'll be unfrozen and can play again right away. If you log on you'll appear on a special map, unable to move or talk. But you will be able to use the setemail command if you need to, or ask a question on the help channel if you need assistance. Just make sure to unfreeze your character within one month. If you wait a month without doing anything at all, your character will be deleted.

Is it true there's going to be a buddy list and instant messenger in the next update?
Our fabulous Finnish fox is working on programming these features. Of course until the moment it's all finished and working, we can't guarantee it will make it into the update. But it's our current intention to try to get it in the next update, which is coming soon. (No, we don't know HOW soon.)

Will everything still work ok with if I have characters in more than one Furcadia folder on my computer?
Yes, it will work fine. We still suggest moving everything into one Furcadia folder, as there will be less benefit from keeping multiple ones now, it's easier to update if you have just one, and it saves a little space on your hard drive. But if you want to keep multiple Furcadia folders for any reason, it will still work fine.

What do I do if I get emails about a character that isn't mine?
This can happen if somebody makes a new character and puts in your email address instead of their own, or if they change an existing character to your email address. If this happens to you and you get an email, just ignore it, don't click on the validation link, and delete the email. It won't hurt anything and it won't affect your account in any way.
